One person was killed and four others were injured in an avalanche in eastern Turkey on Saturday, the Turkish Health Ministry reported.

The victim was identified as national judo player Emre Yazgan, the ministry said in a post on social media platform X.

The 16-year-old Yazgan died at the hospital, while the four who were wounded are in good condition, state broadcaster TRT reported.

A total of 15 members of the national judo youth team went on a hike at around 10 am (0700 GMT) in Palandöken ski resort in the eastern Erzurum province, Erzurum Governor Mustafa Çiftçi told reporters.

Five members of the group were caught in the avalanche shortly after, added Çiftçi in Palandöken on Saturday.

TRT footage showed what seemed to be the moment of the avalanche at a high altitude at Palandöken, and later, rescue teams searching.

One of Turkey’s top winter resorts, Mount Palandöken is some 1,230 kilometres east of Istanbul.
