Tribune News Network Doha The International Sambo Federation (FIAS) hosted a successful ‘Sambo’ Russian martial art event at Aspire Zone in celebration of Qatar National Sport Day on Tuesday. The event witnessed the presence of HE Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani as well as Ambassador of Qatar to Russia HE Fahad bin Mohammed al Attiyah, Ambassador of Russia to Qatar HE Nurmakhmad Kholov, and FIAS president Vasily Shestakov. The event, organised in cooperation with Russian oil company Rosneft, was part of a series of activities held in the framework of the Qatar Russia Year of Culture 2018. The participants engaged in interactive master-classes and workshops by the best Russian Sambo experts. The event also featured a variety of entertainment installations for children and an exhibition space showcasing the 80-year history of the unique self-defence sport, attracting hundreds of visitors interested in learning it. Fahad bin Mohammed al Attiyah said: “The introduction of Sambo during our National Sport Day is a further testament to the value of cultural exchange between Qatar and Russia. We are pleased to have seen our communities actively engage in this unique aspect of Russian sport and look forward to continued collaboration between our two nations.” Vasily Shestakov said: “We are delighted with the outstanding turnout for the Sambo show. As a unique face of Russian sports culture, we very much value the positive response and engagement we have seen in introducing this sport to the diverse communities celebrating National Sport Day this year.”
