The future Cadillac Formula One team plans to have at least one American in their line-up once the US carmakers join the sport from 2026.

"I think the focus is to have at least one American driver from the start. But it makes sense to have an experienced driver by the side of this American. This will probably be Colton Herta,” supervisory board member MArio Andretti told dpa.

Herta currently competes for Andretti Global in the IndyCar Series.

The General Motors brand is joining the top motorsport series in two years as an 11th team pending full confirmation by the governing body FIA.

Asked about concrete talks with German driver Mick Schumacher, Andretti said: "Many drivers are being considered. We are keeping all options open.”

Schumacher, who raced for Haas between 2021-2022, has once again failed to sign with a team for 2025. For now, he will focus on his future with the Alpine endurance team.

"You never know what will happen at the time of the final decision.

Suddenly, someone you would never have thought of is available,” Andretti said.

Haas is currently the only American team on the grid and haven’t had a successful stint in F1 so far. Asked about the chance of success for a second American team, Andretti said: "I wish I had the answer for this.

"The business is so unpredictable. All you can do is give it your best shot and build up enough strength and knowledge and experience within the team to make it through.”
