NEW YORK: The UN Security Council will discuss the situation in Syria later on Friday in a closed consultation session, at the request of France and Slovenia.
Geir Pedersen, the Special Envoy for Syria, is expected to brief Council members on the latest developments in the country.
Earlier this month, the UN Security Council called for an inclusive Syrian-led political process, stressing that this process must meet the aspirations of all Syrians and enable them to determine their future in a peaceful and democratic manner.
The Council, in a statement issued by its fifteen members, pointed out the importance of the political process ensuring the rights of the Syrian people to determine their future.
The Security Council members also affirmed their commitment to Syria's sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity, calling on all States to respect these principles.
