Darlene Regis

More than just a pretty face, Unica Raija De Vera, is a multi-talented powerhouse breaking barriers and proving that age is no hindrance to success.

At just 15, she is a strong force to be reckoned with, making waves in modeling, singing, dancing, and hosting.

She made her mark on the New York Times Square Billboard, strutted down the runways in fashion capitals across the world, clinched global pageant titles, and hit the headlines of international magazines.

Born in the Philippines and now based in Qatar, this rising star is captivating fans with her innate talent and infectious energy.

Qatar Tribune interviewed this exceptional young talent—read on to discover her remarkable story.

What was your starting point and how did you make it to this level?

I was scouted by a talent agency in the Philippines, who believed I could do more than just sing and dance. At first, I was hesitant because I knew I would be competing with candidates from other countries, many of whom were already established in the modeling industry. I love challenging myself because that’s how I grow into a better version of myself.

How do you deal with the pressure of competition?

I deal with it by not comparing myself to others and reminding myself that the only person I should compete with is the person I am today, so I can become a better version of myself tomorrow.

How do you overcome challenges and recover from setbacks?

Failing is a part of life. My failures show me what I can improve on, so I am thankful for them.

Who in the modeling, fashion, or pageant industry inspires you, and why?

I admire Naomi Campbell. Her walk is just truly captivating and I believe she could rock anything.

What principle do you live by?

“Yesterday is not ours to recover. But tomorrow is ours to win.” by Lyndon Johnson.

What advice early in your career has had a lasting impact on you?

“Everyone throws stones at the tree that bears fruit.” I continue to chase my dreams, always taking the first step in every new endeavor, and constantly challenging myself.

What advice would you give to Filipinos aspiring to follow your path?

Take risks because you’ll never know your capabilities if you never try.

Multi-Title Holder

In 2021, Unica was crowned “Princess of the Universe,” propelling her into the spotlight. Believing that “a crown should be worn not just on the head but in the heart,” she uses her title to support her advocacy for underprivileged school children in Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan, Philippines.

Unica was the very first “Munting Prinsesa of Qatar” in 2017, at the age of eight. Since her win, she has led initiatives like feeding programs and school supply donations. Now, as the Ambassador for Princess of the Universe 2023, she continues to champion these causes with unwavering dedication.

Academic and Community Leader

Unica excels both academically and in her community. A top student at Philippines School Doha (PSD), she has won numerous quiz bowls, public speaking contests, sports dances, and singing competitions since the age of seven.

“Since I was five, my parents taught me to save a portion of any money I receive and share a percentage of every blessing. Each year, my family and I sponsor school supplies for 3-5 kindergarten schools in underserved barangays in Pangasinan. During the pandemic, I also helped families in Qatar,” she said.

“If I don’t have money to give, I volunteer my singing talent instead, believing it can help lift the spirits of those in need. I often perform at the Polo-OWWA shelter in Qatar,” she added.

Fashion and Modeling Icon

At the age of seven, Unica began her modeling journey with the Qatar Fashion Meets Passion Fashion Show in 2015, returning in 2016 and 2017. She has also been a model with the Trinity Talent Agency since 2018.

After the pandemic, she resumed modeling, participating in the Kulay Fashion Show in 2021.

Her passion for fashion shines through in her victories at inter-school modeling shows and beauty pageants.

Unica also served as Stage Director for a major fashion show and beauty pageant for children.

In 2023, she showcased designs by Qatar-based Celso Collado Dahil. She was the only Filipina model in the May 2024 Doha Fashion Show, wearing Mitch Desunia.

On the international stage, she walked the runway for Desunia in New York and London (2023), and in London and Milan (2024), while continuing to participate in fashion shows both locally and globally.

Versatile Singer

When asked about her hobbies and interests outside of modeling, she replied, “I love to sing. My parents told me that before I could even speak clearly, I was already singing, and my voice had a natural vibrato. I play the keyboard, ukulele, and guitar, and I’m trying to compose my own songs. I also enjoy dancing, vlogging, and acting.”

“Being a front-act singer at various concerts in Qatar has been one of the greatest memories of my life. I performed at the Bamboo live concert when I was 9 years old. My most recent front-act performance was at Regine Velasquez’s concert in June 2023,” she added.

Media Favourite

A head-turner and trailblazer, she has been featured by top magazines, including World Fashion Media News Magazine-UK in 2022, Harper’s Bazaar-British in July-August 2023, and LLQ Lifestyle Magazine-Qatar in July 2023.

In August 2024, she was featured in Manila Fashion Magazine in an article titled “Unica Raija De Vera: A Multi-Talented Phenom Making Waves in the Entertainment Industry – Princess of The Universe 2021.”

Recent Achievements

Representing the White Hawks team, Unica clinched titles such as Miss Junior High School (JHS) Intrams 2024, Best in Sportswear, Best in Jersey Attire, and Miss Winsome Smile at PSD. The competition showcased participants’ beauty, poise, grace, and wit.

She also graced Paris Fashion Week 2024, modeling designs by Mitch Desunia.

In addition to her modeling career, Unica is honing her skills in news writing and broadcasting as a News Writer and Broadcaster for The Link (S.Y. 2024-2025).

As she relentlessly pursues her dreams, she continues to inspire young girls, motivating them to chase their own crowns.
