MunichcTypeface:> Germany captain Joshua Kimmich has said the immediate aftermath of the dramatic Euro 2024 exit against Spain showed him that the home tournament was much more than a sporting comeback. Germany lost 2-1 late in extra time against the eventual champions and after a Spanish handball did controversially not result in a penalty with the score at 1-1. Kimmich said in a column for weekend paper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung he had a sleepless night after what he named “the most emotional international match” so far in his career. “Played well, put everything into it and still got knocked out. At home. At the home European Championship. We all had to deal with that first,” Kimmich recalled. He said that some players talked “until it got light and the first people came back for breakfast. It was a strange atmosphere, somewhere between maximally disappointed and somehow special. ‘This last night, with the disappointment of the elimination, without sleep, with many conversations and also a lot of silence, helped me understand that we must not reduce this tournament to the sporting result. “Something had grown together again. Between us as a team and the whole country. The way I experienced it as a child. The way it feels right and the way it should be. I took this feeling with me. That’s exactly why I remember this summer with a smile.” Germany rebounded from several poor years and early exits at big events in 2024, with the Spain match the only defeat of the year for Julian Nagelsmann’s team which won back the hearts of the fans.
