THE General Authority of Customs has thwarted an attempt to smuggle chewing tobacco into Qatar and seized 959 bags of the prohibited tobacco product from a container at Hamad Port.
The chewing tobacco was detected during the inspection of a container loaded with 600 packets of paper cups. The customs inspector noticed a difference in the classification and packing of the parcels. On further investigation, he found 959 bags of chewing tobacco hidden under paper cups.
A report of the incident was made and the seized material was sent to the concerned authorities.
Abdul Hadi al Sahli, director of the Maritime Customs Department at the authority, praised the efficiency of the customs officers and their dedication to working to preserve the security and stability of the country.
The authority has recently witnessed a number of seizures of narcotics, which confirms the efficient vigilance of Customs officials to prevent the entry of narcotics into the country.
He stressed that the seizures confirm the success of authority’s recent steps toward improving performance, including holding a training course.
