In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), Team Qatar athletes have continued to inspire schoolchildren across Qatar through a series of motivational and educational visits for a second consecutive week.
Former gymnast Shaden Wahdan, together with aspiring gymnast Duha al Habashi, visited Moza Bint Mohammed School for a masterclass session for 4th graders. During the programme, students had a chance to learn about the different apparatuses used in gymnastics and spend the morning with the Team Qatar athletes working on their flexible moves.
Shaden and Duha teamed up to introduce gymnastics to the 8-9 year olds who were excited to ask questions about the sport and try it out. The gymnasts showcased some of their skills before helping the students in doing somersaults and cartwheels.
Wahdan said: “I had an extremely wonderful time with the students today. Being able to share my experience with them was a remarkable feeling. Starting from a very young age is crucial for gymnasts, therefore it makes me happy to see schools building interest in sports”.
Team Qatar’s school visits allow QOC to achieve its mission to promote sport across the community. Moza Bint Mohammed School is well-equipped allowing children to learn and try new sports. Team Qatar’s gymnasts were able to demonstrate their sport using the apparatuses at the school and successfully deliver an exciting masterclass.
23-year-old Shaden Wahdan was the most successful artistic gymnast at the Arab Games Doha 2011 where she won five medals, including two golds. Wahdan had her eyes set on Rio 2016, however, she was forced to retire early due to an injury. Since her retirement, she has dedicated her time and experience to coaching the next generation.
Team Qatar’s young gymnast Duha al Habashi recently won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals at the Gymnasiade Lebanon 2017. Duha is one of the promising young female Qatari gymnasts with great potential to compete for Qatar at an international level.
QOC is celebrating its 40th anniversary on March 14, marking tremendous successes in the different sports fields and all levels in its short history. Since its new brand launch in 2017, the QOC refreshed its image to focus on uniting, inspiring and engaging the community through Team Qatar athletes.
Through Team Qatar’s school visits, the QOC aims to raise awareness of various sports by introducing them to schoolchildren in order to promote healthy lifestyle among the next generation.
