Irish rider Bertram Allen, who has often excelled at the glorious Al Shaqab the past few years, once again lit up the Doha arena on his mount GK Casper to steal the show in the feature Longines Global Champions Tour Table A, FEI Art. 238.2.2 1.50/1.55m class on Friday.
On what was a cold and windy evening, the 23-year-old rider stood tall with his 11-year-old stallion as they combined superbly to excel on the pristine turf needing just 33.75seconds in the jump off to clear a faultess eight-obstacle course. Bertram won €36,450 as the top prize.
The fabulous and racy show in the speed class saw him edge past Belgium’s Karel Cox, who rode Dublin van Overis, and finished in 34.07secs.
French Julien Epilliard on Usual Suspect d’Auge had to settle for the third spot despite a solid effort of 34.12secs.
It turned out to be a scintillating jump off which had 16 riders from the original starting line up of 47 riders. As the contest got hotter towards the close, the goodly crowd braved the chill and cheered and applauded the thrilling showjumping.
Qatar Olympic President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al Thani also graced the occasion.
Earlier in the LGCT 1.45m class, the third CSI 5* competition of the Tour of Doha saw international combinations rocket around the Al Shaqab arena. This speed class had 24 starters and half of those jumped clear rounds, meaning the riders really had to step on the gas in order to be in the placings.
The first clear was jumped by Cindy van der Straten (BEL) and the gutsy Chacco R in 71.73 seconds, however they didn’t hold onto the lead for long as speed demon Marlon Modolo Zanotelli (BRA) let his horse J-Figyelem travel with ease round the 180m x 20m arena to land his stop as the 7th fastest clear round by the end of the class.
New face on the Tour this year Kim Emmen (NED) put in a brilliant attempt but was pushed out of the final top 3 by last to go Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS) and her ten year old mare Veronese Teamjoy.
Belgium’s Nicola Philippaerts (BEL) had a sensational season last year and is off and running to replicate that again in 2019. He took out strides where he could and galloped through the finish line in 59.87 seconds finishing on top of the podium. Julien Epaillard (FRA) and Usual Suspect d’Auge put their foot down from the start in hope to beat Nicola’s time. Unfortunately, he was just pipped to the post but took home second place, just 0.03 seconds behind Nicola.
Earlier in the day, the eighth round of National equestrians series Hathab saw HussaIn Said Haidan emerge winner in the Small Tour class riding Colijn. He accumulated 65 points with a best tme of 47.86secs.LGCT CSI5* FEI Art. 238.2.2 1.50/1.55m
