Visitors to the three-day South Africa Festival hosted recently at Spar Hypermarket in the Tawar Mall felt transported to the African country. The supermarket looked like a mini South Africa during the festival, which featured a wide range of South African products brought all the way from the country for the festival. Over 200 different products on display created a quintessential South African ambiance at the festival venue.
The shops displayed typical South African products including spices, mixed herbs, tea, among others. Also on display were traditional South African dishes and street foods that tempted the visitors.
South African restaurant brands such as Ocean Basket, Butchers Grill and Nandos were also present with their sumptuous offerings.
South African Ambassador to Qatar HE Faizel Moosa who officiated at the festival said it was a huge draw not only for the South Africans but also local shoppers willing to explore what South Africa has to offer.
The ambassador said, “Coming here makes me feel quite at home. South Africa is always brand conscious and I think Spar is going all out to make South Africans feel at home.”
Moosa said that the items he tasted at the festival made him feel at home. “The quality is excellent. I am encouraging this kind of programmes. I want South Africans to come and have the same experience.”
The ambassador said that the product range that they brought was wide but there was still room for improvement. “We will work closely with Spar and we want to make sure that all South Africans come to shop at Spar.”
South African envoy’s spouse Anika Moosa was so grateful that the store had brought the items in Qatar. “I would like to thank Spar for bringing South African products.”
She urged the South African expatriates to go and get the items.”
It was not only the South Africans who have welcomed the products from their country, other nationalities, too, have taken a liking to them. ‘This is the first time that I have visited Spar Supermarkets and it has been a great experience. The prices are very reasonable and the rage wide enough. I have managed to find here lots of products that I look for only in the UK,” said a shopper from the United Kingdom.
Another shopper who has been in Qatar for only three weeks said, “I found all the products to my liking. I have found Rooibos Tea which is very difficult to find in shops in Qatar, and the Spar has it here. I have also been comparing prices and the prices are really good.
One South African visitor exulted, “I am so happy to see South African products here. We have been carrying along these products from home. While coming back from South Africa, our luggage is full of these products. When someone is coming from home, they would bring us the products. Now we don’t have to worry since these items are available here and at affordable prices.”
“Whenever I return from vacation, almost all the bags I carry are mostly packed with foodstuffs. Sometimes my bags become overweight during check-in due to these items. But you have to consume them in four months’ time otherwise they would get spoiled. I am happy that I shall no longer have to carry these items when coming back,” said another expatriate.
Mary Muthoni, a Kenyan expatriate, said that even though she was not a South African, she was fond of South African stuffs and was happy that she could find the items here in Qatar. “South African spices are really great; they make the food so delicious.”
