Julien Epaillard, who stole the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix Doha show at Al Shaqab last Saturday, once again retuned to the glittering arena carrying his super riding form and the Frenchman topped the CSI5* 1.50m speed class of CHI Al Shaqab 2019 international competition on an action-packed Thursday.
The 41-year-old Epaillard this time strode the vastly laid course on 10-year-old chestnut stallion Virtuose Champeix to gallop with aplomb in what was a 58.86secs’ flawless showjumping. The effort saw Julien pick the top podium finish and a prize of €23,375.
Following in second place was Brazilian Yuri Mansur on dark bay gelding Carlson and the combine clocked 61.19secs. He won €14,025.
Kevin Staut, also of France, on bay gelding Evert claimed the third spot finishing in 61.64secs and was rewarded €9.350.
A delighted Epaillard said, “I am very happy. I saw Yuri Mansur in the lead and so tried to be faster. It worked and it is a fantastic day for me. I took a risk and it worked. Al Shaqab has one of the best facilities for horses and riders and I enjoy competing here.”
Earlier in the CSI5* Two Phases Against the clock (274.1.5.3) 1.45m class, Belgium’s Jos Veerloy on grey stallion Caracas emerged as the best with flawless and fastest rides in both the phases clocking 41.94 and 33,77secs.
Verlooy said, “It was great to win. My horse jumped super. He decided to go faster the first day – that was my plan, so that was good. Al Shaqab has an unbelievable stadium, the facilities are super for the riders and horses. It’s my fourth time here and I really like to come here (to participate). I’m looking forward to the Grand Prix on Saturday.”
Geir Gullikson, also of Belgium, was runner-up riding VDL Groep Quatro, while French Simon Delestre on Filou Carlo Zimenquest was third.
The attractive para-dressage competitions -- where the bond between the rider and the horse is expressed -- lit up the indoor arena of Al Shaqab with some superb combining of the riders and their horses saw Singapore’s Laurentia Yen-Yi Tan top the first competition with her 13-year-old bay gelding Florenzius S.
The other competitions were won by Julie Payne of Britain on Pandora, Annemarieke Roling-Nobel of the Netherlands on Doo Schufro, Brazilian Rodolpho Riskalla on Don Henrico and Ciska Vermeulen of Belgium with horse Rohmeo.
The competition for Inter-Nations Camp in showjumping was equally exciting with the young riders eager to show their skills and beat the competition.
Britain’s Fraser Hayden Reed of Al Maida Club emerged as the best riding Higgs while Qatar’s Khalifa Abdulla al Khaldi (Al Zubara Club) on Charming Boy and Ali Mohammed al Qadi, Barzan Club on Jalieny Diamant Z finished second and third respectively.
In Hathab, the National equestrian series, Jessica Waldon of Britain won the Dressage Level 1 competition combining with her horse Lusso Del Castegno logging 68.621 points.
Level 2 was claimed by Mohammed Salem al Marri on Gin Tonic Van de Kranenburg with a total of 68.214 points.CSI5* One Round Against the clock (238.2.1) 1.50m
