The Al Jazeera Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Media is set to commence on Saturday and will run through Sunday, January 11 and 12, at the Sheraton Doha Hotel. Organised by the Al Jazeera Media Institute, the event will bring together a distinguished group of specialists and experts in media and technology.
In its second edition, the conference will focus on the role of artificial intelligence in enhancing news quality and accuracy, showcasing applications of the latest tools in the media industry, and presenting successful international examples of AI integration in newsrooms. It will also address the legal and ethical challenges linked to the use of AI and provide an open forum for discussing its impact on media professionals.
The first session on the first day will discuss the latest artificial intelligence tools used in media with a qualitative participation of Dr Yousry Mohdeb, a senior digital officer at Google Cloud Platform; Rabih Saad, senior director of solution engineering at Sisco; Shadi Haddad, regional director of data, artificial intelligence and innovation at Microsoft; Daniel Hare, Founder and CEO of Zeotap; and Vinicius Vasconcelos, senior advisor and head of media practices at IBM.
The second session on the same day will delve into Al Jazeera Media Network’s utilization of artificial intelligence, highlighting its role in advancing media operations across the Network. The discussion will include an overview of smart applications and tools implemented in various channels and sectors, AI’s contribution to collecting, processing, and publishing news, and contingency plans to address potential technical errors or hindrances arising from AI usage in newsrooms.
Featured speakers for this session include Ramzan Al Nuaimi, director of the Creativity Department at Al Jazeera Media Network; Asif Hamidi, news manager at Al Jazeera Arabic Channel; David Hostiter, director of the Product Development Department at Al Jazeera Media Network; and Dr Mohammed bin Naamoun, Artificial Intelligence Expert at Al Jazeera Network.
The first session of the second day will focus on the pioneering role of artificial intelligence in newsrooms by exploring successful global experiments with AI tools in media.
The session will highlight the transformative impact of AI and modern technologies on journalism through case studies from organizations such as Reuters, The Washington Post, Associated Press, and News Without Borders.
The second session will address the challenges of utilizing artificial intelligence in media, examining its impact on the journalism profession from an academic perspective. Key topics will include issues like "algorithmic bias,” AI’s influence on the Arabic language, and the values and ethics of journalism.
The discussion will also cover reshaping AI for the future of journalism, challenges related to public trust in AI-generated content, cybersecurity concerns, and the necessity of developing appropriate educational curricula and training programs to adapt to rapid technological advancements.
The conference will also feature a technology exhibition where several companies leveraging AI to develop products and services will participate.
