HAMAD Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Trauma System has been successfully reaccredited by Accreditation Canada International (ACI) and awarded the Trauma Distinction Award of Excellence.
The achievement endorses the quality and safety of the care provided by the entire service and follows the Trauma System’s initial accreditation by ACI in 2015, when HMC became the first trauma organisation in the world to earn this recognition. Dr Hassan al Thani, head of Trauma Services at HMC explained that major trauma is any injury that has the potential to cause prolonged disability or death.
“In Qatar and the wider Gulf region, trauma is the leading cause of death and injury in the young adult population and it is, therefore, vitally important that the care we provide to patients with traumatic injuries is of the very highest standards,” said Dr al Thani.
“I am delighted that the progress we have made across the Trauma System has been formally recognised by Accreditation Canada International. HMC’s Trauma System provides comprehensive care for trauma patients including pre-hospital care, emergency care in the Trauma Center and advanced rehabilitation services. We have worked hard to ensure we meet the very highest international standards and this accreditation is an important external endorsement of our achievements,” added Dr al Thani.
In 2007, Hamad General Hospital established its Level 1 Trauma Center, based on the highly regarded, evidence-based classification of the American College of Surgeons, Committee on Trauma. Over the past decade, the Trauma Center has grown and developed into a comprehensive Trauma System comprising of a full range of care services for trauma patients.
“The system is a collaboration that includes the entire continuum of trauma patient care. As our population continues to grow, so too does the number of traumatic injuries happening in Qatar. Every year, the Hamad Trauma Center receives between 2,000 and 2,500 patients with traumatic injuries, of which around 40 to 45 percent are a result of road accidents,” added Dr al Thani.
The Trauma System’s role in providing life-saving treatment, through the Ambulance Service and Trauma Center, as well as the work done by the rehabilitation teams to maximise these patients’ recovery, is of great importance to Qatar’s population. Yet HMC’s Trauma System is equally committed to injury prevention by improving safety in Qatar with the ultimate aim of reducing the number of people suffering traumatic injuries.
“Through our quality improvement, education, and outreach programs, which are all supported by local data from our National Trauma Registry, we aim to work with the community to raise awareness of important safety messages and encourage people to take simple measures to protect themselves from preventable accidents,” said Dr al Thani.
