DOHA: In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries at breakneck speed, Al Jazeera Media Institute convened experts, journalists, and technologists on Saturday for the second edition of the Artificial Intelligence in Media conference. Held at the Sheraton Doha, the two-day event delves into AI’s transformative potential for journalism while addressing the ethical challenges that accompany its adoption.
Dr Mostefa Souag, Acting Director General of Al Jazeera Media Network, opened the conference with a keynote speech that set the tone for an ambitious and reflective dialogue. "This isn’t just another technological advancement,” he said. "AI represents a profound transformation that affects both the current state and future of journalism. We must ensure it serves humanity while safeguarding the ethics of our profession.”
In an exclusive statement to Qatar Tribune, Dr Souag emphasized the significance of this second edition:
"This conference must surpass the first in terms of quality and outcomes. The first edition was experimental, but AI has since evolved significantly over the past year or so. AI develops faster than we do, but in my opinion, it is not smarter than us. This edition aims to present the latest advancements in AI, making it distinctive—and it seems to be achieving that so far.”
He also shared his personal perspective on the role of AI in journalism:
"I am against replacing humans with machines. I support using technology to enhance the quality of work, accelerate processes, and assist journalists, but not to replace them.”
A Year of Progress: Building on the First Edition
The inaugural edition of this conference in March 2023 marked a pioneering step in examining AI’s impact on journalism. Since then, the field has evolved rapidly, and Al Jazeera has continued to innovate. Dr. Souag highlighted the network’s efforts to integrate AI across its channels, digital platforms, and production processes, enhancing both efficiency and content personalization.
Al Jazeera’s Media Institute has been pivotal in these advancements, publishing articles and video reports on AI applications in media, and delivering advanced training programs to equip journalists with the tools and knowledge needed to use AI responsibly.
A Visionary Keynote by Abran Maldonado
The conference’s highlight was a keynote address by Abran Maldonado, Ambassador for OpenAI and a trailblazer in AI and metaverse technologies. Maldonado, one of the pioneering engineers behind GPT systems, offered a glimpse into the future of AI-powered media.
"I’ve been testing AI models long before they were released to the public,” he said, reflecting on his work with OpenAI, Google, and Nvidia. Maldonado showcased a groundbreaking human avatar, Clara, who represents the convergence of AI and human-like digital interactions.
Clara, described as the first digital human agent designed with GPT technology, has become a symbol of AI’s potential. She has appeared on magazine covers, participated in global events, and now serves as a tool for understanding AI’s implications for journalism.
"From live content delivery to efficient news gathering, AI can empower journalists to focus on impactful storytelling,” Clara said during her stage appearance. However, she emphasized the need for transparency and ethical standards to combat misinformation.
When asked about her impression of Qatar, Clara highlighted the country’s unique blend of tradition and innovation. "The vibrant culture, stunning architecture, and commitment to education and technological advancement make Qatar a fascinating hub for growth and creativity,” she said.

Practical workshops complemented these sessions, offering hands-on demonstrations of AI tools for various aspects of journalistic work.
Balancing Innovation and Integrity
Throughout the conference, speakers stressed the importance of balancing AI’s capabilities with journalistic integrity. Dr. Souag reiterated his stance on the role of AI in media:
"By embracing AI’s potential while prioritizing integrity, we can create a more informed and engaged public. At the heart of our efforts must always be the human element, ensuring that our investment in AI serves humanity.”
Maldonado echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that AI’s role is to augment human creativity and efficiency. "Let’s work together to harness this technology responsibly for a brighter media future,” he said.
Charting the Future of Journalism
