As part of its efforts to promote community sports and strengthen its ties with the local community, Qatar University (QU) on Sunday announced the launch of the inaugural edition of the “ElCaptain” Futsal League.
The league will take place on the university’s campus with broad participation from sports teams and support from several sponsors and organizers. The event aims to honor the legacy of Captain Saeed Al Mesnad, one of Qatar’s renowned sports figures, and to emphasize the societal role of sports in Qatar.
In his speech at the press conference, Dr Senaid Al Marri, Director of the Sports Affairs Department at QU, stated, “At QU, we have three main pillars we strive to achieve: education, scientific research, and community service.
Hosting the Captain Saeed Al Mesnad League embodies our commitment to community service. We take pride in supporting and promoting a culture of sports in Qatar while highlighting the contributions of prominent sports figures like Captain Saeed Al Mesnad.”
Marri added that the idea of honouring Captain Saeed Al Mesnad had been in consideration for some time, but it gained momentum following an initiative from his son.
Dr Omar Al Ansari, President of QU, and Dr Mohammed Diab, Vice President for Student Affairs, supported the initiative.
Marri emphasized the importance of this event in enhancing engagement with the Qatari community and showcasing sports as a lifestyle.
He also pointed out that QU is committed to utilizing its sports facilities to host multiple tournaments that serve both students and the community.
He commended the role of Ramadan sports events in this regard and added, “In addition to the Captain Saeed Al Mesnad League, we organize tournaments under the Qatar Collegiate Sports Federation, as well as internal tournaments at QU. These activities represent a sustainable investment in our sports facilities and an open invitation for everyone to engage in fostering sports as a comprehensive concept.
On his part Abdullah Al Qahtani, Head of the Competitions Committee for the Captain Saeed Al Mesnad League, expressed his gratitude to QU for hosting the league.
He emphasized that the organization of the tournament was the result of extensive studies aimed at delivering a distinguished championship. Al Qahtani stated, “The Captain Saeed Al Mesnad League seeks to promote sportsmanship and revitalize Qatari football through futsal.
“We have attracted over 60 Qatari players, including prominent names in the sports arena, and we expect high-level competition among eight teams over six weeks.”
Al Qahtani also highlighted the significance of the inaugural edition in establishing the league’s reputation, saying, “The success of this edition will lay the foundation for the continuity of the league in the coming years. We hope to see strong support and engagement from the public to make this a landmark sports event.
He concluded by mentioning the possibility of expanding collaboration with QU to organize other sports activities in the future, particularly during Ramadan. He affirmed that the success of the first edition would facilitate organizing subsequent editions.
