The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention, held from January 8 to 10 this year, marked a historic first for Eastern India as Bhubaneswar, Odisha, hosted this prestigious event. Organised by the Government of India in partnership with the Government of Odisha, the convention celebrated the contributions of the Indian diaspora under the theme, ‘Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat’.
The event drew vibrant participation from 75 countries, with the Indian community in Qatar forming one of the largest contingents of more than 200 participants.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated PBD 2025 on January 9, emphasising the diaspora’s role in achieving the vision of a developed India by 2047. He also encouraged the diaspora to preserve their heritage, participate in India’s tourism campaign, and contribute to sectors like technology and sustainable development.
President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Christine Carla Kangaloo addressed the gathering virtually as the chief guest.
The convention’s valedictory session was presided over by President of India Droupadi Murmu, who commended the Indian diaspora’s indomitable spirit and reiterated the government’s commitment to their welfare through cultural, consular, and economic initiatives. She also conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards on 27 individuals from 24 countries, recognising their outstanding contributions.
The convention’s opening day featured the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, with sessions led by External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. These sessions highlighted Odisha’s investment potential and cultural richness.
Over the two days, panel discussions explored topics such as migrant skills, sustainable development, women’s leadership, and cultural connections. Exhibitions spotlighted the diaspora’s contributions, including advancements in technology.
The Indian delegation from Qatar, coordinated by the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC), Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF), Indian Business and Professionals Council (IBPC), and the Indian Embassy, made a significant impact at the convention.
Qatar’s delegates engaged with Ministers Kirti Vardhan Singh (MoS for External Affairs) and Dharmendra Pradhan (Minister of Education), discussing opportunities for business collaborations and cultural connections between India and Qatar.
The delegates also took the opportunity to explore Odisha’s cultural gems, including visits to Konark and Puri.
