WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden has announced that the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement will last six weeks, with a major process to rebuild the Strip set to begin.

In a White House address, Biden emphasised that the ceasefire would be permanent, noting that the precise contours of this plan were laid out on May 31, 2024.

He emphasised that the deal would halt the fighting in Gaza and surge humanitarian assistance to the Strip, noting that American hostages would be released in the first phase of the agreement.

Biden noted that his administration had worked with US President-elect Donald Trump's administration as one team to reach this agreement.

He said his team worked tirelessly to reach the deal, adding, "My diplomacy never ceased in their efforts to get this done."
