Biathlon superstar Johannes Thingnes Boe will end his career at the end of the season in March, he said in a news conference on Saturday.

Bø is one of the most successful biathletes in the history of the sport with 20 world championship titles, five World Cup titles and five Olympic gold medals.

“Originally I planned to continue another year but the Olympics crave even more from me and those around me,” he said.

“I know I could manage to win more often because I have a wonderful gift. I hardly have to train to be number one, but it is not enough to keep going for another year,” he admitted.

“It takes a lot out of you and the people around you to remain number one in the sport.” Boe read the announcement from his phone, but broke into tears after only one sentence.

“This is very hard,” he said, as he was overtaken by tears throughout the news conference. But he added: “In 20 years, when my children move out, I certainly will not regret it.”

He currently leads the 2024-25 season standings.
