US President Donald Trump threatened to impose sanctions on Russia over the war in Ukraine and called on the Kremlin to stop the conflict in a post on Truth Social on Wednesday.
“STOP this ridiculous War! IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE,” Trump said on the platform which he cofounded.
“If we don’t make a ‘deal,’ and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries,” Trump said in his post of the war that began in 2022.
“Let’s get this war, which never would have started if I were President, over with! We can do it the easy way, or the hard way - and the easy way is always better. It’s time to ‘MAKE A DEAL.’ NO MORE LIVES SHOULD BE LOST!!!” he said.
Trump, who took office on Monday, has in the past said he is willing to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in order to end the conflict.
The US, the EU and other states have already imposed numerous punitive measures on Russia and Russian politicians, businesspeople and military personnel since Moscow launched the full-scale invasion in February 2022.
It was not clear what further sanctions Trump was considering.
Ukraine is heavily dependent on Western support as it seeks to fend off the invasion, primarily massive arms supplies from Washington.
It is also unclear whether Trump plans to maintain the billions in Ukraine aid pledged by his predecessor, former president Joe Biden.
