Winter season brings another opportunity to express one’s self through fashion. The colder weather calls for layering with fabrics and clothing, which is an exciting time to experiment with new looks. It’s also that time of the year where one can switch up one’s wardrobe, while for others it’s also a chance to upgrade their personal fashion styles.

Qatar Tribune spoke to a number of women in Doha who shared their own winter fashion styles, and gave some practical tips to thrive during the season. The ladies also highlighted the importance of paying attention to one’s appearance and fashion style in the workplace and shared some of the challenges they face when dressing up in Doha during winter.

Rochelle Fabul, 36-year-old Filipino expatriate working as a Teacher Assistant in Doha

“My winter fashion style is plain and easy wearing. While during summer I prefer light clothing, I use thick clothing in winter. However, I make sure that I do not overdo this by making my outfits too formal while at the same time, they have to keep me warm.

One challenge I face during winter is the unpredictable climate of the region; one day it is hot and there is even sun radiation, while other days the climate is windy and even cold. To address this, I always wear a light scarf or pashmina and it also helps that I have a small foldable jacket.

Paying attention to one’s appearance is very important because it means you respect your coworkers. It also increases your morale and gives you a professional feeling that you are prepared to face the day. This does not mean that expensive clothing is required, but being smart shaven, well washed, neat, properly fitted and decently dressed for the workplace is sufficient.

For some fashion tips, I would recommend to begin with the basics. For instance, don’t buy five of the same shirt but instead buy one quality shirt that complies with the rest of the items on the list. Consider fit – nothing ever looks better than well-fitted clothing. Try not to be discouraged if something doesn’t work for you, because it may work for someone else but not for you. And just a little word on accessories – don’t overlook the importance of these! This piece of jewelry, a scarf or even a necklace or earrings can set an outfit to a whole new level. Lastly, remember to enjoy the process and make it all that much more fun! Fashion is something one should wear to have the ability of displaying your own person.”

Sahla Melki, 39-year-old Tunisian expatriate working as a TV Producer in Doha

“My winter fashion style in Doha leans toward layering and incorporating cozy fabrics. I like to wear lightweight sweaters, trench coats, and boots paired with jeans or leggings. It’s a chance to experiment with darker or neutral tones and textured fabrics like wool or cashmere, which I avoid in the hotter months. Compared to summer, where I prioritize airy fabrics and light colors to stay cool, winter allows me to play with more structured pieces and accessories like scarves and hats.

One challenge during winter is dealing with sudden temperature changes, especially when transitioning from cold outdoor air to heated indoor spaces. To handle this, I focus on wearing versatile clothing, like sweaters or hoodies with zippers, so I can easily adjust to the temperature. Another challenge is keeping my skin hydrated since cooler weather can be drying. I make sure to use a good moisturizer and carry a lip balm to avoid discomfort throughout the day.

Fashion and appearance in the workplace are crucial as they reflect professionalism and confidence. Your outfit can influence first impressions, showcase attention to detail, and communicate respect for the environment you’re in. That said, it’s not just about wearing trendy clothes but finding a polished, comfortable style that aligns with the workplace culture. For instance, I lean toward tailored pieces, modest cuts, and simple yet classy accessories to maintain a professional

appearance.

To improve your fashion style, start by understanding your personal preferences and body shape, as this helps you choose clothing that flatters and feels comfortable. Opt for versatile wardrobe staples in neutral tones that you can mix and match, adding statement pieces for variety. Hydration and skincare are equally essential, as glowing, healthy skin enhances any look. Most importantly, embrace your individuality and wear what makes you feel confident, as confidence is the foundation of great style.”

Meghna Surendan, 31-year-old Indian expatriate and Social Media Influencer in Doha

“Winter outfits are heavier and warmer, while during other seasons I favor lightweight and breathable materials. Whatever the season is, I always prefer comfort over fashion. In Doha during winter it’s mild but cool, especially in the evenings, so my style reflects the balance between staying warm and looking stylish. Mornings and evenings can be chilly, but afternoons are warmer, making it tricky to dress appropriately throughout the day. So I opt for easily removable layers, such as light cardigans or jackets, over thinner base layers like turtlenecks or cotton shirts. A scarf or shawl adds warmth in the morning and can be taken off when the day heats up.

Winter outfits need to be cozy without compromising on style, especially for social gatherings or events.

In a multicultural city like Doha, workplaces often host diverse teams, where attention to dress codes and seasonal adjustments is highly valued. Your appearance communicates your attitude toward your work and colleagues. Dressing appropriately, even in winter, signals professionalism and respect for the workplace. Paying attention to fashion and appearance in the workplace, even during winter in Doha, is important for several reasons. While winter is mild and short, it offers an opportunity to demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, and personal style.

Winter air in Doha can be dry, so prioritize moisturizing. Doha’s sun can also be harsh even in winter. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to protect against UV damage. By paying attention to clothing, skincare, and thoughtful accessorizing, you can create stylish, comfortable, and seasonally appropriate looks while enhancing your personal style.”

Isra Fejzullaj, Albanian student at Northwestern University Qatar (NU-Q) and Freelance TV Presenter in Doha

“Winter in Qatar is a season I look forward to all year—it brings cool weather, vibrant events, and the perfect excuse to switch up my wardrobe. I find myself going out much more during winter, which means dressing up becomes both exciting and a bit of a challenge.

My winter style revolves around cozy elegant pieces. I love modest fits, and I carry that into the season with a touch of layering. Since Doha’s winter chill is manageable, I get to experiment with textures like wool and breathable fabrics without the need for bulky layers.

As a university student preparing for the professional world, I’ve learned that paying attention to your fashion and appearance is about more than just looking good—it’s about presenting yourself confidently and leaving a positive impression. In the workplace, your appearance communicates your attention to detail, professionalism, and respect for the environment you’re in. It doesn’t mean you need to follow every trend, but dressing appropriately and thoughtfully can boost both your confidence and how others perceive you.

Improving your fashion style starts with understanding what makes you feel confident and comfortable. The best fashion tip? Confidence. Wear what makes you feel good, and don’t be afraid to own your unique style. It’s not about perfection; it’s about self-expression.”
