Umm Qarn-owned Yazeed and Khalifa bin Sheail al Kuwari’s The Blue Eye split the two biggest races of the Qatar Sword & Trophy Day at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club Racecourse in New Al Rayyan on Thursday.
An Alban de Mieulle-schooled Yazeed had his revenge of sorts over Julian Smart-trained Ebraz and Gazwan when the six-year-old gray colt, ridden by Oliver Peslier, landed the Qatar Gold Sword (Group 1 PA) by half a length.
Gazwan, who had beaten Yazeed in the prestigious race last year, was second, followed by de Mieulle’s ward Tayf. Ebraz, the winner of the prestigious Amir Sword (Group 1 PA) race in February this year, against Yazeed, was fourth, three lengths ahead of She’ris.
This was the second victory for Yazeed in the season’s four races, including his win in the Late Jassim Bin Mohammed Al Thani Trophy – Qatar National Day Trophy in December last year. This also fetched trainer de Mieulle a triple in the day.
The Blue Eye, under British jockey Harry Bentley, held off Al Shaqab Racing’s Heshem by one and a half lengths to win the Qatar Gold Trophy (QA Group1) 2,200m race for four years or older thoroghbreds. This winner also helped owner Kuwari and trainer Jassim Ghazali to wrap a treble.
Alignement (Theo Bachelot) was third by nose margin, while Galactic Prince (JP Guillambert) picked the fourth spot, beating Noor Al Hawa (Maxime Guyon) by neck.
For seven-year-old bay horse The Blue Eye, it was the second victory in four races this season after the Barzan Cup. He also took his overall winners to 17 in 29 races.
Al Jeryan Stud’s AJS Moaddie, ridden by Ronan Thomas, produced a brilliant burst and beat Tabouk by a length to grab the Qatar Silver Sword, the third most important race of the day.
Ramzani also had the joy of winning a double today. His ward Al Lusail, with Ronan Thomas astride, stormed ahead with 200m left in the Local Thoroughbreds and went on to outrun highest-rated Surra Man Raa from outside to win the race.
