TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORKDOHAThe Lean Construction Institute-Qatar (LCI-Q) and Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) have signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on research and education to increase the adoption of ‘Lean Construction’ in Qatar.The goal of LCI-Qatar to improve the construction industry through the efficiency and productivity gains inherent in applying ‘Lean’ principles and practices is broadly aligned with HBKU’s research priorities focusing on infrastructure sustainability challenges and opportunities.This joint Memorandum of Understanding will serve as a catalyst for connecting theory and practice in order to bridge the gap between academia and industry and improve knowledge and adoption of international best practices in Lean Design and Construction in Qatar. The research and development activities of HBKU, combined with the expertise of LCI-Qatar, represent a unique and advantageous opportunity to address the needs and challenges confronting stakeholders.The agreement focuses on capacity building in addition to joint research and development activities. Internships and other programs for HBKU students to improve their skills and engagement with the industry will be part of the reciprocal training initiatives. These training opportunities will also be available to those working in the engineering, facility design and operation, and infrastructure sectors.The new Mou was signed on Monday at HBKU Headquarters in the presence of LCI-Qatar President Dr. Abdulla Yaqoub Al-Sayed and institute board members. Dr. Richard O’Kennedy, Vice President for Research, and Dr. Rachid Zaffou, Senior Planning and Research Director, were also in attendance.Dr. Richard O’Kennedy said following the signing, "HBKU is pleased to join efforts with LCI-Qatar and advance knowledge-intensive capacity building on ‘Lean’ thinking for the construction industry.” By combining sustainability and efficiency, our agreement will enable research initiatives that will catalyze the growth of sustainable buildings and infrastructure in Qatar.”Commenting on the agreement, Dr. Abdulla Al-Sayed at LCI-Qatar, said: "Since 2019, LCI-Qatar’s efforts have been to enhance the performance of construction projects to generate value, eliminate waste, increase efficiency, and maximize productivity through the Lean project delivery approach. We welcome this opportunity to cooperate with HBKU and benefit from the university’s scientific research and educational expertise.
