DOHA: In a groundbreaking announcement, Visit Qatar, in partnership with the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO), World Triathlon, and the Qatar Cycling and Triathlon Federation, has unveiled plans to host the T100 Triathlon World Championship Final in Doha from 2025 to 2029. This five-year partnership underscores Qatar’s position as a global hub for sports and a leader in sports tourism.
The inaugural Qatar T100 Triathlon World Championship Final will take place from December 11–13, 2025, featuring a dynamic course designed to highlight the best of Doha and Lusail. Participants will swim in the pristine waters of the Arabian Gulf, cycle along scenic routes, and run through iconic landmarks such as the Lusail Stadium.
A festival for all: Professionals and amateurs alike
The championship is not just for elite athletes—it’s designed to engage the broader community. Amateur athletes will have the opportunity to compete in the 100km triathlon distance, which includes a 2km swim, 80km bike ride, and 18km run. This inclusive approach ensures that the event serves as both a world-class competition and a celebration of triathlon as a sport for all.
CEO of Visit Qatar Eng Abdulaziz Al Mawlawi highlighted the event’s significance for the country, and said,“We are delighted to partner with the Professional Triathletes Organisation to host the Qatar T100 Triathlon World Championship Final in our vibrant cities for the next five years. This event underscores Qatar’s growing reputation as a premier sports destination, showcasing our commitment to hosting world-class international sporting events. Qatar’s infrastructure, state-of-the-art facilities, and rich sports culture offer the perfect environment to host this event. This collaboration further strengthens Qatar’s position as a global hub for sports tourism, inspiring both professional athletes and enthusiasts alike.”
Global recognition
The T100 series, designated as the Official World Championship Tour of Long-Distance Triathlon by World Triathlon, is a major milestone for the sport. President of World Triathlon Antonio F Arimany described the series as a “new chapter” for triathlon.
“The T100 Triathlon World Championship Final represents a new chapter for our sport, combining elite competition with global accessibility and participation. Partnering with Visit Qatar and the Qatar Triathlon Federation ensures not only a world-class experience for professional athletes but also an incredible opportunity for the broader triathlon community to connect with our sport,” he said.
Triathlon in Qatar: A growing legacy
Qatar’s growing sports ecosystem, including cutting-edge facilities for training, wellness, and sports medicine, makes it an ideal location for such a prestigious event. Sam Renouf, CEO of the PTO, praised Qatar’s rapid development as a global destination for sports.
“We have always been clear about our strategy for the T100 Triathlon World Tour – to feature iconic locations and create a world-class destination for our series,” Renouf said during a press conference in Doha.
“This five-year partnership with Visit Qatar allows us to achieve that vision in one of the fastest-growing, family-friendly tourist destinations in the world. The legacy of major events like the FIFA World Cup and Formula 1 has encouraged such demand. The T100 Race to Qatar will not only be a spectacular finale for our professional series but also provide opportunities for amateur swimmers, cyclists, and runners.”
Renouf emphasized Qatar’s balance between respecting its heritage and focusing on innovation, calling it the perfect alignment for the T100 series’ goals.
Inspiring generations and elevating local talent
The partnership also aligns with Qatar’s National Vision 2030, which emphasizes health, wellness, and active lifestyles. President of the Qatar Cycling and Triathlon Federation Abdulaziz Al Tamimi highlighted the event’s importance for developing local talent and fostering a love for sports within the community.
“Hosting the Qatar T100 Triathlon World Championship Final over the next five years marks a significant milestone in strengthening Qatar’s position as a global hub for sports,” Al Tamimi said. “This championship simplifies logistical challenges for athletes and reflects Qatar’s commitment to fostering a vibrant sports culture. Developing our national team is a key priority, as we prepare our athletes to compete globally and proudly represent Qatar.”
Al Tamimi also emphasized the event’s inspirational value.“This championship will inspire younger generations to adopt active lifestyles, aligning with Qatar’s National Vision 2030. By hosting this event, we reinforce Qatar’s legacy of organizing world-class sporting events that promote health, wellness, and resilience.”
World-class athletes to compete in Qatar
The T100 series will bring together some of the best athletes in the world. Olympic champions and World Championship winners from 13 countries have already confirmed their participation for 2025. Among them are American Olympian Taylor Knibb and Belgian Olympian Marten Van Riel, who became the first-ever T100 series world champions in Dubai.
Athletes will compete in at least five of the ten T100 races during the season, with their top four scores and their result in the Qatar T100 Final (where points count double) determining their final ranking.
