Qatar is fully committed to protecting endangered animal species in the country, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has reaffirmed.
In a statement issued to mark the World Turtle Day, the ministry’s Department of Environmental Protection of Reserves and Wildlife stated that it’s making all efforts, in cooperation with Qatar Petroleum, to protect the Hawksbill turtles, which is on the endangered species list. The International Union for Conservation of Nature, the global authority on the status of the natural world and the measures needed to safeguard it, has placed the Hawksbill turtles on the endangered species list since 1982, the statement pointed out.
The project to protect Hawksbill turtles began in 2003, the department noted, adding that the 2019 season has already seen a completion of coordination between Qatar Petroleum, which finances the project, and Qatar University, which is implementing the project. The first step was taken in April when Fuwairit Beach was closed and the public informed through media, in order to prepare for the nesting season.
