A faculty member from Qatar University College of Pharmacy (CPH) has won the second place in the Poster Award at the Inaugural Medical Education Research Forum, which was recently organised by Weill Cornel Medicine- Qatar.
CPH Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and QU Health Chair for Inter-professional Education Committee Dr. Alla El Awaisi presented a poster presentation entitled, "Exploring healthcare facilitators’ perceptions in delivering inter-professional activities in Qatar: a qualitative study”.
This study aimed to explore facilitators’ perceptions and experiences in delivering IPE in Qatar, and to identify the enablers and barriers faced during the implementation of IPE. Knowledge, skills, and previous exposure to IPE were perceived to enable student and facilitator participation. Whereas, hierarchy and workload were viewed as barriers.
The project was conducted with QU PharmD graduate Saba Sheikh Ali, QU BSc graduate Aya Abu-Nada during their final year of studies. The research was under the supervision of Dr El Awaisi with QU CPH Associate Professor Dr Ahmed Awaisu& QU CPH clinical lecturer Dr Daniel Rainkie as co-supervisors.
Dr Mohammad Diab, CPH Dean, said: "The award highly reflects on the quality and skills of our faculty, being able to compete nationally and internationally and harvest awards. It also reflects on the College focus in supporting the professional development of its faculty which is in alignment with Qatar National Vision for human development.”
Dr Alla El Awaisi said: "Faculty IPE development and facilitator training with effective preparation and orientation are critical for effective implementation of IPE. Overall, facilitators valued IPE in preparing students for collaborative practice. However, the findings reinforced the necessity of having facilitator training and debriefing sessions to ensure facilitators are competent and confident. The findings can inform the development of quality and sustainable IPE activities in the future.”
Saba Sheikh Ali said: "I’m very happy that our research poster won the award at this important medical education forum. This project will be valuable in improving Inter-professional Education (IPE) among healthcare colleges, which will consequently enhance collaborative practice and patient cantered care in Qatar. I am very grateful to my project supervisors for their continuous support and guidance as well as the College of Pharmacy for giving me this great research opportunity.”
The inaugural Medical Education Research Forum drew participation of a large number of healthcare faculty and professionals across Qatar and provided a venue for knowledge transfer and showcasing evolutionary pedagogical innovations in teaching and learning across the medical education.
Dr El Awaisi also delivered an oral presentation entitled Transforming Interprofessionalism in Qatar- Lessons Learned from the Interprofessional Education Committee Experience (2014-2018).
The aim of this presentation was to describe the committee approach of IPE integration and reflect on lessons learnt from the four years of experience.
