To coincide with the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019, global foundation Save the Dream and Magnum Photos hosted a special photo exhibition in Paris that displayed a selection of strong photographs of high-profile female athletes.
The event brought together some of the world’s leading female footballers and athletes who shared their experiences in overcoming barriers and becoming sport champions.
During the exhibition, inspired by the female athletes, over thirty girls from Paris’ outskirts joined for a call for action on greater access to sport for young women and girls and breaking down the walls for their right to practice sport.
Honey Thaljieh, FIFA Corporate Communications Manager, Save the Dream Ambassador, co-founder of women’s football in Palestine and the first captain of the Palestinian national team said; “First time I got football shoes was when FIFA came to Palestine to organise a football course, till today I have those shoes. You must focus on your dreams to make them happen. I made them happen from the streets of Bethlehem, Palestine to the FIFA HQ where I work now. Everything is possible, don’t let anybody tell you what you can do or what you cannot.”
Laura Stéphanie Georges, French football player commented; “I was lucky to have a father who encouraged me to play football. People who are telling you your mistakes are the ones who help you to move forward. Sometimes a critic can be a gift.”
Nadia Nadim, Afghan-Danish football player who plays as for Paris Saint-Germain also added; When I arrived Denmark from Afghanistan, I couldn’t speak the language, I had no shoes to play. I had no money to buy new shoes and I bought used shoes. At the beginning there was a fence between me and those who were already playing football. At the beginning I was just watching. Now I am playing for PSG, because I was courageous to ask to play.”
Massimiliano Montanari, Executive Director at Save the Dream said; “I want to thank our Sport Ambassador Honey Thaljieh, Laura Stéphanie, Nadia Nadim, Karina Leblanc and Jennifer Batu for having shared today at Magnum Photos their stories of hope, resiliency and success. The story of one person can inspire millions of others, and this is what we wanted to achieve through this event.”
