In a massive boost to the healthcare sector in Qatar, Minister of Public Health HE Dr Hanan Mohamed al Kuwari on Tuesday officially inaugurated the expanded Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at the Hamad General Hospital (HGH).
The expanded facility will help reduce the waiting time for patients to undergo surgical procedures. There will be no cancellation of procedures due to unavailability of beds.
The state-of-the-art SICU offers a higher level of care compared to a standard ICU, so patients who have had more complex surgeries can receive the highest standard of post-operative care from staff trained in specialist post-surgical care.
The SICU also cares for patients with life-threatening conditions as well as severely ill patients requiring frequent monitoring and potential intervention or ventilation.
The inauguration of the expanded SICU marks the completion of the surgical services facility, which was officially opened in 2016 by Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani.
The expanded SICU will enable a greater number of patients to be cared for, including those undergoing emergency and elective surgery.
Since its opening in 2016, the capacity of the unit has almost doubled with the number of beds going up from 15 to 27. The SICU features a direct link to both the HGH Operating Theater Suites and the new Surgical Specialty Center. It has four isolation rooms, including three negative pressure rooms, and family waiting rooms.
In a statement, Kuwari said, "Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is on a journey to improve and expand surgical, trauma, and emergency services and capacity in Qatar. The new surgical services facility at HGH has helped meet the growing demand for high-quality surgical care in Qatar and ensure that we stay ahead of demand for these services. This most recent expansion of our SICU will help achieve this aim so we can continue to provide the very best care for surgical patients for many years to come.”
HMC Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Abdulla al Ansari said, "The expansion of HGH’s surgical services is part of an ambitious plan to increase capacity and enhance the hospital’s surgical capabilities. The surgical services facility houses 20 state-of-the-art surgical theaters, a 19-bed Trauma Intensive Care Unit, and state-of-the-art real-time imaging through CT, MRI, Brain Lab, and Artis Zeego imaging technology. It also features a da Vinci Xi surgical robot used for specialist and general surgeries.”
According to Medical Director Dr Yousef al Maslamani this facility is in the surgical complex. "With this opening, we aim to provide safe, compassionate care for all patients,” he said, adding that this expansion will help in increasing the bed capacity.
"The rooms are best of any intensive care unit you can see in the world. The surgeons are highly qualified. The rooms have negative pressure to prevent infections coming to the patient while there.
Dr Maslamani further said, "This will help in reducing waiting time. Previously we would cancel some of the patients if there was no ICU bed available.”
HMC Director of Operating Theatres and Senior Consultant and Head of Craniomaxillofacial Surgery Department Dr Moustafa al Khalil said, "The 27 rooms will support meeting the needs of surgery. With these 27 rooms, we will have zero cancellation of cases due to availability of the intensive care beds.
