Minister of Municipality and Environment HE Eng Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al Subaie on Sunday reiterated the ministry’s support to the Central Municipal Council (CMC) to meet the aspirations of citizens for better services and to contribute to the comprehensive development of the country.
Addressing the opening of the council’s sixth session, Subaie said the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, through its competent bodies, is keen to work together with the council to develop municipal work.
He said the ministry welcomes members to present the demands of their constituencies with regard to projects as well as municipal and environmental services. The ministry, he noted, attaches great importance to the council’s recommendations or requests.
The minister said the ministry’s keenness to ensure the success of the council stems from its firm belief in its importance as the first platform of democracy in Qatar.
The minister congratulated the elected council members and wished the council success in continuing to play its role to serve the State and the citizens, and contribute to comprehensive development of the country, under the leadership of the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani and under the supervision of Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani.
Meanwhile, the CMC reelected Mohamed bin Hammoud Shafi al Shafi as its chairman for the sixth session. Mohammed Hamad Mohammed al Attan al Marri was elected as the vice chairman. All members were also sworn in at the opening of the session.
Shafi, who presided over the opening session, appreciated the efforts of the council members at the previous session for their support and for upholding democratic principles.
Central Municipal Council Secretary General Jaber Hamad al Lakhen welcomed the attendees and stressed the need for full cooperation among all to achieve the desired goals.
In two separate statements following the session, the CMC chairman and vice chairman emphasised the importance of cooperation among members for the benefit of Qatar.
Over the course of 20 years, during which five consecutive sessions were held, the Central Municipal Council has been keeping up with the comprehensive development renaissance of the State of Qatar and has been an active contributor to this process.
The CMC, which consists of 29 members representing 29 constituencies, enjoys full independence in carrying out its responsibilities as defined by law.
The council has also played an important role in activating decisions and laws regarding municipal affairs and in submitting proposals that promote public interest.
