Officials in the Ministry of Interior (MoI) have stressed that the Al Daayen Naval Base, which was inaugurated on Sunday, represents a quantum addition to the development and modernisation move of the ministry as part of its strategy for the next five years, especially with regard to enhancing maritime security and securing the coasts, borders, ports and territorial waters of the State.
The total area of the base is 639,800 square metres, while the built-up area is 143,164 square metres divided into 25 buildings.
Director of Public Security HE Staff Major-General Saad bin Jassim al Khulaifi said the Al Daayen Naval Base would help boost the performance level and ability to excel while meeting the requirements of modern maritime security.
More than 95 percent of the Ministry of Interior building project has been completed.
He said, "This comes in light of the ministry’s keenness to modernise its facilities and the establishment of new security and service buildings in different areas. These are equipped with the latest technology to keep up with the comprehensive development witnessed by the state while ensuring qualified human cadres as well.
"The ministry has a comprehensive plan to modernise its facilities. The works are going on to complete the buildings of the Police College, the General Directorate of Passports and other buildings.”
"This will contribute to the development of the ministry’s performance in carrying out its duties in both maintaining the security and providing various services to the public effortlessly through its service departments,” he added.
Assistant Director-General of Coasts and Borders Security Lieutenant-Colonel Abdul Aziz Ali al Mohannadi said the new building is considered as a quantum leap in the development of marine security services as it includes all the requirements of the modern maritime administration, which will contribute to securing the maritime borders of the state and providing quality services to citizens and residents.
"The new building is a security monument and a prominent sign of urban development in the country. The building combines the authenticity of Qatari heritage with the splendour of modern security design,” he said.
"The building meets the need of the General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security to build modern and advanced maritime capabilities that serve maritime security,” Mohannadi added.
He noted that a new fleet of boats were recently added to the Directorate. They include 48-metre-long boat, which was rated as one of the best marine boats in the world, for surveillance and reconnaissance operations.
The fleet also includes the Hercules 150 type boat, the largest in the fleet of long-distance boats with a length of 48 metres, width of nine metres and speed of 35 knots, which can stay at sea for six consecutive days without refuelling and has the ability to respond quickly, Mohannadi added.
He also highlighted the strategic location of the base in Simaisima area directly on the coast in the middle of the country. The distance from Samisema to the far north is 60 nautical miles and far south is 80 nautical miles. This site has been carefully chosen to facilitate securing of all the territorial waters of the state and the border posts.
The Directorate provides assistance and marine services for beach visitors and water sports enthusiasts around the clock through routine patrols near the coast, Mohannadi said, adding that the Directorate is also responsible for conducting search and rescue operations for persons and maritime vessels.
The Directorate also guards ports, marine, industrial and oil installations in addition to providing security coverage of the waterfront during the conferences, festivals, events and sports activities in the country.
Director of National Command Centre (NCC) Major-General Khalifa Abdullah al Nuaimi said that Al Daayen Naval Base is a real boost for the staff of the General Directorate of Coast and Border Security in carrying out the maritime security tasks entrusted to them and in securing the territorial waters of the State.
