Qatar bounced back with a superb four-wicket victory over Nepal in an ICC Twenty20 World Cup Asia Regional Final match in Singapore on Tuesday.
All-rounder Iman-Ul-Haq provided the crucial breakthrough, which enabled Qatar to wrap the innings at 122. Then the opener smashed a game-high 41 to set up the first triumph for his team in two matches.
After electing to bat first, Nepal had an encouraging start as they raced to 49 in six overs. Haq dismissed opener and skipper Paras Khadka for 28, pushing him to hole out to Noman Sarwar. Khadka hit a six and four boundaries in his 17-ball knock. This wicket triggered a collapse Nepal could not arrest it.
Tamoor Sajjad, nine runs later, dismissed other opener Gyanendra Malla with the help of Iqbal Chaudhry. Malla made 23 off 24 balls, hitting a six and two fours. After getting wickets regularly, Qatar tightened screws further and Nepal lost last six wickets for just 15 runs to post only 122 with three players being sent home in Iqbal Chaudhry’s fourth and final over.
Besides Chaudhry, who got three 21, Sajjad and Noman Sarwar shared four. Sarwar removed the top-scorer Dipendra Singh Airee in the 19th over for 34, which had a sis and a four.
Qatar got an early blow as Faisal Javed was sent back by experienced leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane. However, Imam-Ul-Haq dug in at the other end and let new man Kamran Khan (22 with two sixes and as many fours) do the bulk of scoring to take the score to 38 from 13 for one.
Lamichhane continued to trouble the Qatari batsmen but his three-wicket haul cost him 33 runs and the rivals, boosted by Haq, managed to cross the finish line with four balls to spare. Haq, fifth player to be out at 97, struck half a dozen fours in his 32-ball effort to seal the man-of-the-match award.Brief scoresQatar beat Nepal by four wickets
