Movie buffs in Doha are in for a great time as the eighth South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA) is all set to be held in Qatar.
The prestigious awards show, which will be held on August 15-16, will see a galaxy of South Indian stars lighting up Doha’s firmament for the two-day event at Lusail Indoor Arena, which has a capacity to seat some 8,000 people.
SIIMA is the most-viewed award show in the industry, with awards across four languages -- Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam.
Being held during the current India-Qatar Year of Culture, SIIMA 2019 promises to cater to the large number of South Indian cinema fans by attracting the industry’s biggest stars to Doha.
More than 200 top Indian movie celebrities will be arriving in Doha to attend the event.
The mega show will see 100 awards in 50 categories to be handed out. India’s Ambassador to Qatar HE Kumaran will attend the festivities which commence on India’s Independence Day.
The official announcement for SIIMA 2019 was made in Doha recently with the announcement of tickets release. The ticket-releasing ceremony was attended by Chief Executive Officer of Doha Bank R Seetharaman, Chairman of SIIMA Vishnuvardhan Induri, the CEO of ONE FM 89.6 Naveed Abdulla, and the CCO of ONE FM 89.6, Mohammed Jassim.
The South India cinema, less well known than its northern counterpart, is far more prolific and accounts for about 50 percent of the annual domestic box office collections. SIIMA, which is held outside India, aims to introduce a broader audience to South India cinema, continuing to build upon the ever-widening popularity of Indian cinema.
The event in Doha will recognise the best films and performances in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada films that released in 2018. There will also be special honors for lifetime contributions to cinema, as well as other specialist craft awards.
