AN eatery specialising in fresh seafood preparations at Al Wakra Souq seafront is grabbing the attention of fish lovers for its novel concept.
This is a unique restaurant as it offers customers the option to pick their favourite fish from the nearby fish market and deliver it to the restaurant for cooking.
The barbeque fish restaurant, Danat Al Bahar, was opened with the catchy concept of ‘From Sea to Oven and Oven to Dining’ and attracts visitors from different parts of Qatar.
Another key feature of the restaurant is that customers are served their favourite dishes in kilogrammes, instead of in terms of plates served generally in restaurants.
Special sauces made of special ingredients imported from India and other South Asian countries are served along with a variety of fish preparations to the visitors at the restaurant.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune, Shijas Crescent and Shabir Crescent, long-time fish vendors at Al Wakra who are also owners of the restaurant, said, “Frankly speaking, it’s not a new concept. There existed an eatery based on the same concept at Al Wakra fishing harbour long back. That eatery, however, had to go due to the development work on the harbour and the construction of the souq.”
He added, “Fish is a popular food among both Arab and Asian expatriates. Fortunately, Qatar is also rich in the variety of fish available here. So, we are also trying to promote a healthy food culture through preparations of fresh fish.”
Shijas comes from a coastal village in southern India and has more than 12 years of experience in fishing and fish sale in Doha.
The location of the restaurant close to the fishing harbour helps the restaurant serve fresh fish to customers.
“We are offering fish as fresh as possible without adding any artificial flavours. All spices added to our dishes are directly imported from farmers in Asia and the Middle East,” he informed.
Customers can choose fresh fish from their store at the restaurant. The restaurant brings fish from the market only in the morning hours due to the large number of visitors every day, both Asian and Europeans.
Even though the eatery offers all major varieties of fish available in Qatari waters such as hamour, sherry, prawns, crab and sea bass are the most popular ones.
On the occasion of Eid Al-Adha, the eatery has included more ethnic flavours popular in countries in the Middle East and Asia to its menu. The restaurant is open from 9.30am to 2pm and from 6pm to 12 midnight.
