Madrid: The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, is calling on US President Donald Trump to exert greater influence on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“I think the United States also has the role to put more pressure on Russia to stop this war,” the former prime minister of Estonia said at a meeting with European foreign ministers in Madrid. Russia must agree to a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine and take a step forward, she said. This could, for example, consist of returning deported Ukrainian children or releasing prisoners of war.
In addition to Kallas, the foreign ministers from Poland, France and Spain, as well as EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius, participated in the discussions on the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine. A joint declaration was planned at the conclusion of the meeting, which was also expected to address the current efforts by Trump to secure a ceasefire. (DPA)
