New DELHI: Police have detained a US citizen for illegally visiting North Sentinel Island - one of India’s Andaman Islands - which is home to an isolated tribe, Indian media reported on Thursday.
Citing police, the Andaman Chronicle and other newspapers reported that the 24-year-old Viktor Polyakov visited the island in an attempt to make contact with the indigenous Sentinelese ethnic group, who reject contact with the outside world. Polyakov is accused of endangering the safety of the Sentinelese people. The man from Arizona had initially only approached the island by boat and tried to draw attention to himself using a whistle. Eventually, he went ashore for a short period of time. (DPA)
