MagdeburgcTypeface:>A memorial commemorating the victims of a massacre committed by the Nazis west of Berlin days before the end of World War II launched a digital commemorative book on Sunday to mark 80 years since the atrocity.

The online platform explores the fates of 1,016 concentration camp prisoners who were evacuated from the Mittelbau-Dora and Hannover-Stöcken camps. On April 13, 1945, less than a month before the end of the war, they were herded into a large barn near the northern town of Gardelegen, some 130 kilometres west of Berlin. The building was then set on fire and the inmates were burnt alive or shot dead when trying to escape.

The digital book allows the first targeted research into the victims, many of whom were Polish, the memorial curators said. It is to be updated as fresh information becomes available. (DPA)
