Shuttler Yeo Jia Min became Singapore’s first women’s singles player to reach the quarter-finals of the BWF World Championships as she defeated Vietnam’s World No. 74 Vu Thi Trang in absorbing three sets on Thursday.
The 20-year-old Min won 21-15, 14-21, 21-16 in a match that lasted more than an hour, said the achievement made her “happy and excited”.
“In the second game I started off slower and she was able to be more consistent,”
she said.
However, Yeo rallied and closed out the win against the Vietnamese shuttler, sinking to her knees in relief as Vu’s shot hit the net, sealing her entry to the next round.
Earlier in the tournament, Yeo defeated World No. 1 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan.
Yeo, who is 32nd in the world rankings, will face Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon in the next round. Intanon defeated Indonesian Gregoria Mariska Tunjung 18-21 23-21 21-10.
The Singaporean won her first title of the year earlier this month after triumphing in the women’s singles finals at the Hyderabad Open in India.
Meanwhile India’s PV Sindhu and Sai Praneeth stormed into the quarterfinals women’s and men’s singles respectively.
Praneeth recorded a 21-19, 21-13 win over World No.8 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia in 43 minutes.
Sindhu trounced Beiwen Zhang of USA 21-14, 21-6 to set up a mouthwatering quarter-final against Tai Tzu Ying. The second seed from Chinese Taipei, who enjoys a 10-4 record against Sindhu, worked hard to beat unseeded Kim Ga Eun of Korea 2422, 24-22.
Earlier, HS Prannoy, who had got the better of five-time Chinese world champion Lin Dan, failed to stop a rampaging World No.1 Kento Momota in the pre-quarters, losing in straight games.
India’s top ranked shuttler Kidambi Srikanth also suffered a straight games loss against Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand 14-21, 13-21.
