Asia champions Al Duhail Club of Qatar left here on Monday for Amman, Saudi Arabia to take part in the 2019 IHF Men’s Super Globe.
Al Duhail’s first match is quite tough as they face FC Barcelona, the four-time champions from Spain, in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
The opening day on Tuesday will have two qualifying matches in which Sydney University Handball Club clash with Germany’s Kiel Club and wild card Mudhar Club of Saudi Arabia are pitted against New York City Team.
The quarter-finals will be followed by the semi-finals on Thursday and final on Friday.
Coached by Goran Dzokic, Al Duhail are led by Mansour Ali al Sharshani. They had qualified for the Super Globe after getting past Al Wakrah 22-21 in the Asia Clubs Championships in March.
Other members of Al Duhail are Ahmad Madadi, Amin Qahis, Ahmed Nadir, Shady Hamdoun, Jovan Jesevis, Alaa Belrashed, Firas al Shayeb, Mirnas Grko, Abdel Malik Salahji, Wael al Shatti, Khalaj al Haj, Belel Lena, Mohamed Gilani, Hamdi al Nouri and Marwan al Sassi.
Ten teams are competing in the 2019 edition, two more than in previous tournament. This is due to the split of the Pan-American Team Handball Federation at an IHF Council meeting in Zagreb in the North America and the Caribbean Handball Confederation (NACHC) and the South and Central America Handball Confederation (SCAHC).
New York City THC would become the first team from North America to compete in the IHF Super Globe after finishing top of the continental championship.
