Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said on Wednesday that his government was prepared to evacuate and temporarily host Palestinian civilians wounded or displaced by the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

In remarks delivered before departing on a diplomatic tour of five Middle Eastern nations, Prabowo said Indonesia would begin by sending aircraft to transport roughly 1,000 people from Gaza, prioritizing the injured, orphans, and those suffering from psychological trauma. “We are ready to receive victims - those who are wounded, traumatized, or orphaned - and we will immediately dispatch our foreign minister to coordinate with the Palestinian government and local authorities on how the evacuation can be implemented,” Prabowo said at a press briefing in Jakarta.

Prabowo stressed that the evacuations would be temporary and contingent on coordination with all relevant parties, including the Palestinian Authority and neighbouring countries.

“They must return to their homeland,” he said. “That is the position of the Indonesian government.” The conflict in Gaza has displaced hundreds of thousands and left Gaza’s health care system in ruins.

Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, has no diplomatic ties with Israel and has long positioned itself as a vocal supporter of Palestinian statehood.
