Buenos AIRES: Ecuadorians were choosing a new president in a run-off vote on Sunday while their nation is roiled by multiple crises. The vote is expected to be close between conservative incumbent Daniel Noboa and left-wing politician Luisa González, from former president Rafael Correa’s camp.
The two are almost neck and neck in the latest polls.
Ecuador is struggling with soaring crime with the murder rate having risen from 5.8 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2017 to 50.7 today. Powerful drug gangs are spreading throughout the once relatively safe country and large amounts of cocaine are being smuggled through ports on the Pacific, mainly to Europe and Asia. (DPA)
