Angola’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Manuel Domingos Augusto said Qatar was a strategic partner of his country, which seeks to take advantage of Doha’s experience in exploiting its natural resources to bring about a renaissance in its development.
In an exclusive interview with the Qatar News Agency (QNA), the Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs said his country’s ambition to achieve pioneering development encourages it to cooperate with Qatar to benefit from its unique experience in exploiting its resources of oil and gas.
He said Angola’s President Joao Manuel Lourenco directed his government to work vigorously to strengthen relations with Qatar and turn the existing diplomatic ties into concrete partnership projects.
The Angolan foreign minister said Qatar and his country have agreed to start implementing strategic projects, which will benefit several countries in the African continent, besides the two countries.
He said the strategic projects that the parties will start to implement in Angola represent an important start for cooperation between the two countries and that the next two years will see other notable steps.
Augusto stressed that the visit of President Joao Manuel Lourenco to Doha in the past few days marked an important step in the process of building relations between the two sides, especially as the Angolan government has been seeking to implement strategic visions concerning the establishment of broad-based cooperation with successful partners.
He praised Qatar’s successful history in terms of economic development, pointing out that the two countries are producers and exporters of oil and gas.
“But the difference is that Qatar has used its energy inputs extensively and successfully, to become an important global player in this aspect,” he added.
Augusto pointed out that Angola, which has gone through a period of internal war that destroyed the country and most of the proceeds of its natural wealth, has become safe over the past 17 years.
He said trade between Qatar and Angola was negligible except for some limited cooperation between companies in the energy sector. He welcomed Qatar Airways’ announcement to launch direct flights to Angolan capital Luanda, as of next March.
“It will provide an impetus to the movement of goods between the two countries.”
Augusto pointed out that the two countries have forged cooperations in several sectors, the most important of which are those related to economic diversification. He said Qatar has a lot of experience in this field through its relentless efforts to reduce dependence on its natural resources. Angola seeks to achieve the same and Qatar can play a key role in helping realise that, he added.
He added that the two countries could make a big difference by bringing in Qatari funding and technology to exploit Angola’s natural resources, which would provide double benefits to both sides.
To achieve these objectives, an agreement was reached to organise a visit for a delegation of Qatari businessmen to Angola to explore the realities of investment and the opportunities offered by the investment environment in the country, especially in the oil and gas sector and other sectors including tourism, industry and natural resources, he added.
