Even as Qatar’s construction industry in August lost some of the pace it picked up in July, activity in the key villa construction remained strong.
Almost 72 percent of the permits issued in August for new residential buildings are for villa construction, suggesting a solid construction growth outlook in the residential building sector.
According to the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA), municipalities in Qatar issued 415 building permits in August. Nearly 48 percent of them are for new buildings, including both residential and non-residential structures. Almost 50 percent (208) of them are for extensions or additions and the remaining two percent for fencing purposes.
Of the residential permits, those for apartment construction accounted for 5 percent (nine permits) and “dwellings of housing loans” for 19 percent (31). As many as 118 permits (72 percent) were issued for villa construction.
The PSA report also shows pronounced activity in the construction of commercial buildings. Of the permits issued for building non-residential structures in August, 48 percent (16) were for commercial buildings. It is followed by permits for state buildings with 21 percent (seven) and mosques and industrial buildings such as workshops and factories with 15 percent (five).
In August, Al Rayyan municipality issued the highest number of building permits — 115 permits or 28 percent of the total. It is followed by Doha and Al Wakrah with 85 permits or 20 percent each, Al Da’ayen with 58 permits or 14 percent, Umm Slal with 32 permits or 8 percent, Al Khor with 17 permits or 4 percent, Al Shehaniya with 14 permits or 3 percent and Al Shammal with 9 permits or 2 percent.
The last month also saw the completion of 195 new buildings. A review of the building completion certificates issued in August shows that Al Rayyan municipality issued 65 certificates. It is followed by Al Da’ayen with 59 certificates, Al Wakrah with 49, Doha with 46, Umm Slal with 16, Al Khor with 10 and Al Shammal and Al Sheehaniya with five each.
When compared with the building completion certificates issued in July, PSA has reported a 33 percent increase in August.
