Qatar is now producing more dairy products and poultry than needed for domestic consumption. The production of fresh vegetables, table eggs and red meat has also gone up significantly.
The self-sufficiency rate of dairy products in the country is currently 106 percent and poultry 124 percent, according to Masoud Jarallah al Marri, director of Food Security Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME). Qatar is now producing 17 percent of fresh vegetables, 28 percent of table eggs and 18 percent of red meat needed for domestic consumption, he said.
"The local production of all agricultural items has registered a significant increase in the bid to achieve self-sufficiency and food security in the country,” Marri said in a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA).
Livestock production in the country is also witnessing phenomenal growth as it has marked 34 percent growth in the number of cattle, he said.
He pointed out that the total number of livestock in Qatar at present is about 1,600,000 heads – 1,000,073 sheep, 429,664 goats, 40,857 cows and 128,798 camels.
Marri also pointed to the success of the marketing programmes being conducted by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment for promoting local vegetables. As a result of the marketing initiatives, the total sale of local vegetables in August 2019 reached 78 tonnes, compared with 35 tonnes in the same period last year.
