Qatar has been promoting the vision of sports development of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani through a series of high-profile sporting events and will continue to do so. This was stated by Dahlan al Hamad, the Director General of the IAAF World Athletics Championship Doha 2019, on the opening day of the two-day SIGA Inter-Regional Summit in Doha on Monday.
Organised by the Sports Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA), the first summit was themed ‘Sports Integrity – The Power of Collective Action in the Middle East, Asia and Africa’.
It is being co-hosted by International Centre for Sports Security (ICSS), Qatar Airways, Qatar Chamber of Commerce under the patronage of His Excellency Salah bin Ghanem al Ali, the Minister of Culture and Sports.
Dahlan, also IAAF Vice-President and Asian Athletics Association President, was speaking on the topic ‘Qatar: Host nation of the first mega sporting events in the region’. Replying to a question of Al Kass presenter Rhodri Williams that Qatar has been organising big events for year, Dahlan said, “We’re just trying to fulfill the vision of HH the Amir of Qatar. Hosting major sporting events in Qatar will not emerge without a clear vision from our leader. Sports development is one of the pillars in the 2030 Vision of HH the Amir.
“Sports has been integrating and uniting the world. As long as there is scope of contributing towards global sports development, we’ll continue to do that. Qatar has a strong and rich history of hosting major sporting events. Finding the talent for sports is not a challenge for us. Our main challenge is to bring the talent to the (high) levels of the Qatar’s name.
“Logistically, everything is on the right track and we’re working according to the IAAF’s plan for the World Athletics Championships that Qatar is going to host in the region for the first time,” Dahlan added.
He also said, “We’re honoured that Qataris and non-Qataris are working together to make this championship a big success. Also for the first time, dignitaries in sport will meet outside of the Olympics together such as International Olympic Committee (Executive Board), IAAF Council and Olympic Council of Asia (Executive Board. Teams have started coming here for the championship and we’re excited to meet the world in Qatar soon.”
Earlier in the day, ICSS President Mohammed Hanzab delivered the welcome address. “Globally, we see many integrity issues come to light in sport and collective action is pushing for resolutions and accountability. We are very proud that ICSS INSIGHT is a founding member of the SIGA, and pioneers global action towards safeguarding sport. We look forward to a thought-provoking session during the Inter-Regional Summit in Qatar and we are excited to work alongside Qatar Airways, Ooredoo and Qatar Chamber of Commerce & Industry for a successful event,” he said.
