Azim Jamshed, who is associated with the teaching profession in Pakistan, has written his research thesis on the literary contributions of Qatar-based poet Asif Shafi for his M.Phil degree at Minhaj University, Lahore.
"I really feel honoured that a student of literature selected my poetry for his research work,” said Shafi, who has a long list of well-received books to his credit.
The thesis titled ‘A critical and research overview of Asif Shafi’s poetry’ has also been printed in the book form.
"Jamshed has proved that he has not written the thesis merely to acquire a degree but made a successful attempt to introduce a shining star to the world of literature,” wrote Dr Aisha Azeem on the cover of the book. Jamshed has penned the thesis under the supervision of Dr Aisha.
Shafi is a planning engineer by profession and works with a leading company in Qatar. He graduated from the University of Engineering Technology (UET), Lahore, as a mechanical engineer in 1997.
He started his professional career with Petrochemical Industries, Faisalabad. After working there for over eight years, he got a job in Saudi Arabia and later moved to Kuwait for better prospects. Shafi, who brought out his first book of critical essays on famous Urdu poet Saadullah Shah at the age of 24, considers engineering as his profession and poetry as is his passion.
Shafi’s devotion, perseverance and passion has proved those wrong who believe engineering and poetry cannot go hand in hand. Shafi is a firm believer in the fact that creativity is the main driving force behind the success of any person, be it a poet or an engineer.
Earlier, Pakistan’s Urdu magazine Zarbaft dedicated its 212-page special edition to the literary achievements of Shafi in October 2018.
Shafi, who composes Urdu ghazals, has been appreciated by legendary literary stalwarts like Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi, Shehzad Ahmed, Khawaja Muhammad Zikriya, Amjad Islam Amjad, Dr Saleem Akhter, Shahida Hassan, Saadullah Shah, Idrees Babar, Prof Ali Ahmed Fatmi and Khalid Aleem.
Shafi’s books include ‘Zara Jo Tum Thar Jatay’, ‘Koi Phool Dil Main Khila Nahi’, ‘Kabhi Waqt Milay To Aa Jao’, ‘Juda Hona Hi Parta Hai’, ‘Piar Sazawan’, ‘Tere Hamra Chalna Hai’ and ‘Woh to Khusboo Hai’. Prof Saleem Ahmed Siddiqui published a book in English titled ‘Stranger for Centuries’ comprising translation of Shafi’s select poetry.
Shafi’s ghazals have been sung by famous Bollywood singers like Peenaz Masani, Vaishali Samant, Pooja Gaitonde and Rafique Sheikh. The album of his ghazals has been named after his book ‘Kabhi Waq Miley To Aa Jao’ and recorded at Buss In Studio, Vileparlew, Mumbai, India.
