The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has launched the first phase of a nation-wide beautification project that will see the country’s green space increase 240 percent by 2022.
Nearly 2,650 kilometres of paths for pedestrians and cyclists and 10 million square metres of green spaces will be added as part of the ambitious project.
As part of the launch, Ashghal on Saturday started the ‘Qatar Beautification and Our Kids Planting Trees’ campaign to increase awareness among children about the importance of preserving the environment and planting tree saplings.
The launch of the campaign coincided with the opening of the 5,800-square metre Al Abraj Park in West Bay (Onaiza).
The park boasts 130 distinctive trees, 240 square metres of bush-covered area and 3,530 square metres of lawn area.
The campaign launch and the park opening were announced by the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places, which has been formed in line with the vision of the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani and in accordance with the directives of Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani.
"We are working according to the Amir’s vision to preserve the environment for future generations and increase the green areas,” said Ashghal President Eng. Saad bin Ahmed al Mohannadi.
The Supreme Committee has five main roles — establishing public parks, creating pedestrian and cycle paths, development of Doha Corniche and Central Doha, landscaping and planting trees.
The committee’s role also includes supervising the beautification of some major bridges and bypasses such as the bridges on Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor, the pedestrian bridges on the A-ring and B-ring roads, as well as the implementation of elevated cycle bridges. Additionally, the committee is tasked with the development of some public beaches in different places in Qatar.
Sapling-planting campaign
Ashghal launched the Qatar Beautification and Our Kids Planting Trees campaign in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. It aims to rope in schoolchildren in planting trees in some of the Ashghal project sites.
On Saturday, 30 students from the Ahmed Mansour Primary School for Boys participated in planting 25 tree saplings.
Al Abraj Park
Located amid the business towers in Onaiza, the easily-accessible park will provide a breathing space to people working in and visiting West Bay. The park is designed to resemble a dew drop, with streamlined details. All the park components such as pedestrian and cycle paths curve around seating areas central to them.
The park’s facilities offer a variety of activities, including a green central events area, an exercise area and a walking track made with recycled rubber and local materials. The park also includes a cafeteria building, toilets, tree-shaded seats and wooden pergolas.
The first phase of Ashghal’s beautification project covers several streets in north of Doha such as Legtaifiya, Buhaira, Onaiza and Al Markhiya and parts of Al Waab Street. The beautification of streets such as Al Khafji, Al Jamiaa and Arab League are also underway.
To date, 76 kilometres of pedestrian and cycle paths have been completed, including a 3.5 km path linking the Al Wakra Metro Station with the Al Janoub Stadium. The path is split into a 5-metre asphalt strip for pedestrians and a 3-metre blue strip for cyclists. It runs alongside the road connecting the station and the stadium in each direction.
Other works such as landscaping, planting of tree saplings, setting up kiosks and installing street furniture and lighting are still ongoing. Phase one is scheduled to be completed by the first quarter of 2020.
The Committee has signed QR700 million contracts with five firms to implement some projects.
Technical Committee for Artwork
The Supervisory Committee has also set up a Technical Committee for Artwork to provide opportunity for all local artists to participate and make technical proposals that match the nature of the proposed sites.
It also aims to revive Qatari architectural elements in some internal roads and vital places, which will contribute to emphasising Qatar’s historical and cultural legacy
The technical committee will also play a role in informing and educating the public about the importance of art works in the city and providing the opportunity to receive different and creative art ideas.
