ISL Qatar has announced the 2019-2020 academic year as the ‘Year of Sustainability’ as part of its commitment to sustainable development.
The school has developed various projects in recent years to support sustainability such as the Rooftop Garden, which started out as a project presented in the Qatar Sustainability Competition.
The initiative won one of the prestigious ECO-Schools Programme awards from Doha Bank for the second year in a row.
ISL Qatar has recently launched a new initiative where single-use plastic bottles are no longer being sold on the campus. Besides, recycling bins have been placed around the school in line with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment recycling initiative.
The school is also looking into how to reuse plastic in different ways.
Other projects include collecting old batteries to be sent for recycling while litter pickers have been requested by the Grade three students who are keen to join the cause.
The Solar Power Project is another ongoing project at the school. It aims to illuminate the reception area on solar power. A Mini Model has been created and is in the works of getting presented to showcase the support for clean energy and sustainability.
The school has also registered for the Young Innovator Competition where the idea will be presented later this year.
Last year, the Grade three students made a colourful mat using plastic bags. Over the summer, the mat was brought and donated to a non-governmental organisation in South Africa called Masithandane.
