ViennacTypeface:> Austrian Social Democrats look set to win a regional election vote for a new state parliament in the capital Vienna, despite a surge in support for the right-wing FPÖ, according to exit polls on Sunday.
The Social Democrats (SPÖ) led by Mayor Michael Ludwig won 37% of the vote, holding onto their first place, according to the forecast commissioned by several TV stations.
The FPÖ would therefore expect around 24% of the vote, a strong showing of 16 percentage points more than in 2020, when the party performed unusually poorly in the wake of the Ibiza scandal and related corruption allegations.
That would be in line with opinion polls carried out before the vote suggesting that the FPÖ would see strong gains but not an outright win. (DPA)
