THE Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani graced Qatar University’s (QU) annual graduation ceremony for the Class of 2019 held at Sports & Events Complex on Monday.
The Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani, Speaker of the Shura Council HE Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al Mahmoud, a number of their excellencies sheikhs and ministers, members of the QU administration and faculty, parents of graduates, and other guests attended the event.
In his speech on the occasion of the graduation of QU’s 42nd batch of 3,220 students including, 2,468 females and 752 males, QU President Dr Hassan bin Rashid al Derham said, “As we celebrate the 42nd batch of graduates from Qatar University, our beloved nation is witnessing a renaissance of sorts that has manifested itself in all fields. No doubt, this renaissance would not have been achieved without the accumulation of efforts by the sons of our nation and their standing behind our leadership since the time of its founding until present day. Qatar University has the great honour of contributing to this renaissance through successive generations of graduates who now exceed 50,000.”
He added, “During the past few years, the university has achieved, thanks to Allah (SWT) and the continuous support of our Board of Regents, an advanced role in international university rankings. The university was placed 276 in QS Quacquarelli Symonds Global Rankings and 408 in the Times Higher Education Rankings World University Rankings.”
Derham said that QU has implemented the directives of HH the Amir on focusing on human resource for development. “We have tried to do this by doing three things -- providing academic programmes of international standards at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; producing knowledge and international research that distinguishes itself through its impact on ground and touches on the central needs of the Qatari community; and providing various State institutions with academic advice that contributes to public policy.
Derham was referring to the efforts of the Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI) in supporting government and non-government entities with sound and reliable data that is based on high quality field research.
Derham also mentioned the establishment of the College of Dental Medicine this year and the efforts of the Qatar Mobility Innovations Center (QMIC) to build integrated systems and offer technological solutions as some of the achievements of the university.
Derham talked about QMIC’s smart transportation platform and valuable data bank about traffic and mobility behaviour in Qatar as well as smart heat stress monitoring solution for the safety of workers in the 2022 project.
He said the institute’s research agenda spans a wide range of substantive areas of importance to Qatar, such as education and health, family structure, national identity, financial and business environment and other annual and semi-annual comprehensive surveys.
Derham spoke about the intellectual and cultural interests of QU, mentioning the establishment of the Ibn Khaldon Center for Humanities and Social Sciences, which bridges the gap between theoretical studies and actual needs of Muslim-Arab societies in collaboration with leading institutions and researchers —locally, regionally and internationally— who share the centre’s intellectual concerns.
Addressing the graduating Class of 2019, he said, “As you receive your diplomas, in the presence of our fair leader, you must remember your responsibilities towards Allah (SWT), your nation, the Amir and your family, when you shape the future of the nation, while protecting its values and message. This will not be possible without intention and hard work in everything you do.”
Abdulaziz al Obaidly, a graduate from the Class of 2019, said, “We stand before you today as lawyers, as engineers, judges and diplomats, researchers and scholars of our Arab authenticity, Islamic culture and national identity.”
Another graduate Abdul Karim al Ruwaili, host of the ceremony, said, “One stage has finished, but the journey is not over. We are not the first to arrive and we will not be the last.”QU’s 42nd batch of 3,220 students
