New DELHI: India has signed a contract to purchase 26 Rafale fighter jets from France for its navy, with a technology transfer to integrate Indian-made weapons, the Ministry of Defence in New Delhi said on Monday.

The deal, earlier approved by the Indian security cabinet, is valued at around 630 billion rupees ($7.4 billion).

The delivery of the Dassault Aviation-manufactured Rafale jets is expected to be completed by 2030, with crew training taking place in both India and France. The jet will be capable of operating from Indian aircraft carriers.

India, which is modernizing its military, currently has 36 Rafale fighter jets, and military cooperation with France includes joint exercises across air, land and sea. (DPA)
