Dust up your camping gear and get set to drive up the dunes because the winter camping season in Qatar will start in 20 days.
The season will run from October 30 to March 30, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) said in a statement issued on Thursday.
MME’s Committee for Regulating Camping Activities said citizens who wish to set up long-term camps in the desert during the period can submit requests for camping permits from October 14 to December 31. The applications are required to be submitted to MME’s Protection and Wildlife Department.
MME’s Assistant Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs Ahmed Mohammed al Sada said the applications could be filed at government service centres across the country or through www.mme.gov.qa.
Camping permit registration facility will also be available at the Qatar Mall and the Gulf Mall for four days from October 15.
Sada pointed out that the ministry had taken appropriate measures to ensure campers get to enjoy an ideal camping season without causing any damage to the environment. Reiterating MME’s keenness to strike a balance between public satisfaction and ecological preservation, Sada said ministry had expanded the open beach areas available for public during the season. It will also provide spots for public entertainment at various camping sites and beaches, he added.
Various deterrent measures are also in place to dissuade the public from violating safety and environmental norms during the camping season, said Director of Protection and Wildlife Department Omar Salem al Nuaimi.
The department has joined hands with the Ministry of Interior to deploy observers all over the camping sites and beaches to detect such violations, he said. All such violations would be swiftly taken up by the environmental and municipal prosecution and the Supreme Judiciary Council during and after the camping season, he added.
Nuaimi also welcomed all youth and voluntary initiatives organised by schools and youth centres that promote awareness of the importance of environmental protection.
